Lol...glad you enjoyed my little joke :)

Seriously though 5-8-77 is an extremely boring and straightforward version. Scarlet is decent but the transition, which is key to this combo, is just Keith repeatedly banging the same few chords over and over again. There is little to no variation in Fire and it ends in one of those "oh well, let's just mash the guitar strings real fast so it sounds like static" messes.

Glad to see we agree on the last 2.
I also wrote 4-10-84 by accident so I agree with your 4-20-84.

But in general, stratocaster, I demand for a very specific explanation as to why you eliminated 2-5-78, 4-24-78, and 2-3-79, my personal favorites. VERY specific!

Also as someone who listed 21 top 10's I demand you explain why you only listed 3 top 10's.

if you made a greyfolded with scarlet fires...definitely 02-05-1978 and 02-03-1979 would be in there...find them to be a bit erratic though...02-03-1979 is a much better scarlet than is the fire...04-24-1978 is a good choice, but that month is covered with 04-16-1978...

The Cornell version is just so incredibly tight, they take their time developing the groove...Keith is doing his best Vince impersonation, I love this version, but it's not my favorite...

as far as top 10--definitive list if I can---05-08-77, 10-10-80, 3-31-88, 3-22-90, 10-2-77, 6-18-83, 10-19-81, from here it's tough...tie between 09-04-91, 12-28-86, 04-20-84, need to check out the 5-25-77 again...09-02-1978...

Cliff's choice of 05-25 is nice, would have to give it another whirl...

I'm a persnikcey bastage, one of my pet peeves is when they can't stick the fucking opening to fire...they muck it up in 02-05-1978...that is where it loses points...like I said parts of 02-0379 are A plus, parts are B minus...

Took a bite of that one. Haven't heard it all but the recording is definitely nice and big, with a good mix of crowd and echoes. Will listen more later.

Money quote from jboyaquar:
"The first "Scarlet" in over a week is joyously received. Peppy, fluffy version leads to its life-partner. Jerry's electrifying my spectral ass with his playing on "Fire." "

For weeks following this show my mantra was 'That was the perfect second set!' Okay, that was back in '87 when I was only 28 and no quite as seasoned a listener as today, but I really did enjoy listening to it again.

I didn't know there was a "proper" opening. Are you referring to the "Da, da-da, da-da, da-da-da, Da, da-da da-da..." thing? (Excuse me, my keyboard doesn't have musical notes on it)

By the way I agree 9-02-78 is Good, just didn't have enough variation in the jamming for me (tempo/mood too constant and steady). It may be that the "inconsistency" you cite in my top3 is the "variation" that I enjoy.
